How it's calculated

Retired pay is your High-3 (the average of your highest 36 months of basic pay) times a multiplier: 2.5% per year of service under High-3, or 2.0% under the Blended Retirement System, up to 40 years. Guard and Reserve years come from retirement points: every 360 points is one year. Active duty pay starts when you retire; Guard and Reserve pay starts at 60, or up to 10 years earlier for qualifying active duty since 2008. Retired pay gets full cost-of-living increases, so this page shows everything in today's dollars.

"What it's worth" divides the yearly pay by a safe withdrawal rate for a retirement starting at that age: the amount you'd need invested to produce the same inflation-protected income. When you add it to your plan, your FIRE number drops by that much, and if pay starts after you plan to retire, your investments bridge the gap.

Pay table: DFAS basic pay, effective January 1, 2026. Rules: 10 U.S.C. 1407, 1409, 1415, 12731, 12732 and 12733. Lump sum: DoD discount rate of 6.60% for 2027 elections. For education and planning; your service's retirement office has your official numbers.
